BADDOUR ANNOUNCES SIGNING OF BILL HONORING LT. DEREK HINES
Governor Romney will sign legislation naming bridge after Newburyport’s fallen soldier
June 14, 2006, Boston — Senator Steven A. Baddour (D-Methuen) announced today that on Thursday, June 15 at 10 a.m. in Council Chambers, Governor Romney will sign a bill memorializing Lt. Derek Hines, a 25 tear-old Newburyport native who was shot and killed during a firefight in Afghanistan. The legislation will name the bridge between Amesbury and Newburyport for Lt. Hines as a small testament to his sacrifice for freedom, and the dedication he showed to his community.
“This bill isn’t just about remembering a fallen hero who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country; it’s about recognizing a young man who was a model son, brother, and community member,” commented Senator Baddour. “When Lt. Hines was finishing at West Point, he knew that war was coming and could have transferred, but refused. And even amidst the worst fighting in Afghanistan, the words he shared with his parents were only of comfort. We hope to memorialize him for what he did, but, more importantly, for who he was.”
