MERRIMACK VALLEY SEES INCREASE IN CHAPTER 90 FUNDS FOR 2006
Dollars slated for local transportation projects, road improvements
March 31, 2006, Boston, MA — Senator Steven A. Baddour (D-Methuen) announced today that the Merrimack Valley will see an increase in FY 2007 Chapter 90 funding used by cities and towns for road construction, preservation, and improvement. As Chair of the Joint Committee on Transportation, Senator Baddour played a large role in securing the largest increase in Chapter 90 funds since 1991 through the 2004 Transportation Bond Bill.
Appropriations for municipalities in the First Essex District, which are based on miles of local roadway, population, and employment rate, are as follows:
Amesbury: $250,140
Haverhill: $895,963
Merrimac: $112,589
Methuen: $718,809
Newburyport: $312,715
North Andover: $473,987
Salisbury: $135,675
“Since the beginning of my tenure as Senate Chair of the Transportation Committee, I have been dedicated to ensuring that our roads are safe, well-constructed, and effective modes of transportation,” commented Senator Baddour, who received the 2005 Massachusetts Municipal Association Legislator of the Year Award for increasing funding for Chapter 90. “Maintaining transportation infrastructure isn’t just about safety—the economic growth and long-term development of our community depends on the wise use of our current resources.”
“The city of Haverhill is excited to receive these funds,” commented Haverhill Mayor James Fiorentini. “We look forward to paving more roadways, and patching more potholes than at any time in the past. Some of these funds will be used to purchase a new street sweeper that will be used to keep our parks and neighborhoods cleaner.”
